We had the craziest weather today, it was sunny and it rained, then the sky got dark and we had an amazing thunder and lightning storm, then the hail came… our swollen creek is running so fast it should join the Olympic swimming team.  The signs of summer are just not showing.  Sure it’s spring in the Pacific Northwest, rain is the normal, but I have a nice reminder of summer on my leg and it’s not a tan.  Apparently when I was standing in the rain talking to my neighbor the other night, I was being feasted on by mosquitoes!  I noticed my leg itched, scratched it to find a huge welt.  The suckers got me 6 different times on the same leg!  Ugh.  Isn’t it too early for mosquitoes?

I noticed that my jar of homemade lavender oil was sitting on the counter.  So itchy and scratchy I decided to turn that into some mosquito repellent.  We have a lavender bush and so does my best friend, with our flowers and the ones she gave me I put them into a mason jar then covered them with oil and let them sit.  After they sat for several months, I strained them out of the oil then packed the jar full again of another batch of flowers and put the oil back on top.  So essentially I soaked the oil twice.  I’ve been using that lavender oil as my repellent for the last couple years, I’ve just kept it in the fridge and applied it when I needed it.  Lavender oil works amazingly for mosquitoes, but you have to apply more often than you would the chemical types.  So I wanted the power punch this year, I mean if they are out already and eating me alive like it’s June then I think we’ll need some good defenses this year.  I went online and found that lemon and eucalyptus oil was the best oils to ward off mosquitoes, so I just happened to have a little bottle of essential oils.  So I put some lemon eucalyptus oil in my lavender.  Then I made a salve out of it. I wrote a previous blog about making salves here.

So I have my defenses for the year.  But that doesn’t take care of my current problem, how much they itch!  So I did a little looking and found some interesting ideas.  I took these ideas from this site.

  • Rub the bite with soap.
  • Apply an ice pack to the bite.
  • Mix baking soda with enough water to make a paste and apply to the bite.
  • Apply lavender and tea tree oils with a swab.
  • Rub a piece of freshly cut onion on the bite.
  • A dab of toothpaste is soothing, too.

I’ve done baking soda on bee stings, the onion just sounds like it would sting like crazy, and I don’t use conventional toothpaste…  The one thing the author suggests before the points above was to rub a banana skin on them.  We have tons of bananas around and so I was itching enough, and the results were pretty fabulous actually.  The banana skin took away the itch 100%.  I am not sure how long it lasts but I’m willing to reapply.  However a banana peel at work probably wouldn’t work, I think there I’d stick with some essential oils which could be easily applied in the restroom. 🙂  Happy mosquito season folks, hope they are not going crazy on you like they are on me.

Juice is Beautiful

Just wanted to share how beautiful juice can be.  Not only does it make your insides feel amazing but it makes your eyes have something wonderful to see as well.  God came up with some amazing colors!

I took the dogs out for a last potty before bed last night and discovered my neighbor was outside having a smoke.  She is my first “friend” in our new neighborhood, we’ve had a few conversations and seem to have a bit in common, plus I don’t have many girl friends.  I don’t know what it is but girls tend to be a bit more… drama then men.  I have two very close friends from high school who are female but that’s about it.  Anyway, we got to chatting and all of a sudden I blurt out “we’ve been juicing and I feel great!”  Then I laughed and said “oh I’m such a dork.”  I started telling her about the juicing, how great I feel and that I got the idea from the movie Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.  She, to my surprise, had actually heard of it.  I also encouraged her to watch the free viewing of Hungry for Change.  It was strange though, I mean she and I don’t really know each other well.  She has told me a bit about her divorce and some personal stuff, but I’ve only lived next to her since November.  There I was standing in the rain, in my pink slippers, chatting about how great juicing made me feel.  It’s a bit unlike me actually, I’m not a get in your face type of person.  If you see something and ask then I’ll tell you generally, but just blurting stuff out to someone who is pretty much a stranger, is just not my style, but there I was.

Wednesday night Hubby made some organic locally grown hamburger with some brown rice and topped it with some Bragg’s amino acids, and some fresh veggies, including some home-grown sprouts.  I really thought I wanted it, it was the first time I ate meat a while.  It didn’t leave me feeling the way I thought I would.  I didn’t feel bad, but I certainly didn’t feel the way I do normally, well my normal now that is.  I found myself going back to the kitchen to top my bowl off with more fresh sprouts, what is going on with me!?

Yesterday we ran out of produce, so I juiced everything we had in the morning and shared it with Hubby.  It wasn’t enough to keep me full all day, so I munched on nuts and had some chicken feet soup stock with veggies.  Yet my body was craving juice.  Hubby went to the store and I came home to a big glass of juice, it hit my stomach and every cell was dancing.

Several years ago I became a vegetarian, I did it because I felt like a hypocrite.  How could I eat meat if I was too squeamish to kill it myself?  I lasted a year until a steak from a BBQ called me away from that life.  I’m not claiming to be a vegetarian but I can say that my body is reacting very well to this new diet.  I had a huge salad last night that filled me up, which is fairly uncommon, usually only carbs fill me like that.  I’m a sugar addict, and yet I don’t crave sugar anymore!  In fact, I don’t crave anything really.  I would get cravings for hamburgers (fat), carbs and sweets, coffee… now my body seems to only crave juice and healthy produce.  It feels weird, and yet exciting.  I’ve even lost some weight to boot!  Weight loss is not the goal but it is a nice motivator, I sure have some pounds to lose.  My skin is starting to clear up, I have color in my skin, I am more clear in thinking, and I have more energy than I use to, even my hair has more of a luster to it.  My body likes this new juicing thing!  I feel amazing, absolutely amazing and I never use to feel amazing.  Just the other day I was in my office and it was a slow day and I was alone, so I started doing squats and wall push ups and then jogging in place.  I felt all light and good so I started to do jumping jacks and soon remembered that my body weight has not quite caught up to how good I feel, I was reminded how heavy I felt, but that is just temporary.  Juicing is a lifestyle, I don’t believe it’s fleeting for a moment, because once you start and feel good, you can’t stop!  I feel amazing!

Hubby and I have been juicing since last week but really changed everything on Sunday.  Don’t get me wrong, we have been doing smoothies every morning and we eat fairly healthy as a whole, but Sunday was a turning point.  We started juicing as our main source of nutrition, have eaten very little else, and have been starting to feel the goods and bads along with it.  This will not be a glamorous list, but it’s true and if you decide to get into major juicing then these are some things you can expect.

First off let me give it to you straight as far as what is going into our mouths.  Every morning we start out with a smoothie, that used to be made with raw milk, now I’ve been using water.  I add a banana, kelp, spirulina, dulce, carob and wheat grass powders to it, with a little stevia and blend.  I drink this on my way to work and it fills me up.  We wake up and juice as well.  We juice what we have and right now we have abundance because we wanted to not feel “deprived.”  We juice most of these things together: kale, chard, celery, cilantro, parsley, broccoli, carrot, apple, ginger, beet, kiwi, strawberry, pineapple, jicama.   We don’t always add everything, the kiwi, pineapple and strawberries are eaten when we want something sweet.  Last night I cut up pineapple, kiwi and a banana and it was so good, plus it got rid of that sweet tooth.  We have had bone broth soup, I ate the last of some organic crackers I had at work, we’ve snacked on nuts, drank tea, even have peanut butter (all these are mainly organic too)… so we’re not going “crazy” but we are also not eating a whole lot other than juice.  We also just got an order of Teeccino in, oh my goodness this stuff is my favorite!  We are not drinking raw milk, we aren’t eating much meat in fact I haven’t had any since Saturday, we do plan on eating our eggs, and big huge salads!  I think the main thing here is staying off processed foods, processed meats and sugar and increasing juicing and fresh raw veggies and fruits.  Ok so that’s the lifestyle, I almost called it a “diet.”  It’s not…it’s a lifestyle.

Lets jump right into the positives, well positives so far that is.  First off I notice my body is actually wanting the juice.  You actually feel it energizing your cells and I think my body likes that. 🙂  When we juice I get a weird giddy energy, I want to drink the juice really badly.  Second, I notice higher energy levels.  That said, today I don’t feel that as much.  There is a certain detox period, that will be covered in the cons section.  The energy levels are super high after drinking the juice.  Hubby and I spent tons of time outside Saturday, came in and juiced and all of a sudden we were back up cleaning our house.  I also feel happier, I don’t know how to describe it, but I do feel a bit “lighter” in the head and heart.  My craving for sugar is reduced drastically.  I’m a sugar-aholic, Hi I’m Corri and I’m a sugar-aholic.  I actually remember a doctor telling me to try to stop eating sugar in high school, I laughed… oh if I would have listened!  Anyway, I notice that I am not tempted like I use to be or would be if I went on a “diet.”  A patient brought in some thank you caramels yesterday, they stare at me every time I walk in the break room, but I don’t have the urge to grab one like I used to.  I mean I can stop the whole positive section with this alone!  This is huge, especially for me.  I think this can prove that my body is getting all it’s nutrition and it doesn’t have to crave something, because it’s getting all it needs.  I am also having very regular bowel movements.  I consider this a plus.  I am satisfied, I’m not generally hungry, there are some occasions this is not the case but for the most part I’m full.

Now the cons.  I’m going to start with the most unpleasant, gas.  I don’t know what it is about eating raw food, but when I started looking around at people eating a new raw diet, the big complaint was gas.  Yesterday was worse than today, and I suspect it goes away, but maybe grab some lavender oil in some type of spray bottle if you work around others. 🙂  Diarrhea, really do I have to say much more?  It’s not horrible, and it didn’t start right away but there is generally a day or two where this might be a time you want to have a bathroom close by.  Headaches, I’m starting to get them more.  I think it’s from the sugar honestly, but it could be a number of things.  See when you go through something like this, there is most certainly a detox period.  In the movie Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, Joe says that he wanted to stay in bed the first two days of his juice fast.  You feel a disconnect from the world, but also you are going through some major body changes.  Especially if you ate pretty rotten up until the point of the fast.  Hubby and I ate pretty well, sure we still enjoyed a treat here and there… but we didn’t live on McDonald’s and Taco Bell before doing this, in fact I can’t remember the last time I’ve even had them (in my 20’s I lived on that junk).   If you do, you might want to take a couple of days off and allow your healing to begin, alone.    Today I’m hungry.  I don’t know what it is, but I am.  I am also pretty tired today, again this could be a detox thing as well.  So combined with a headache, hunger and the tired I’m a little grumpy.  I want to stress A LITTLE, I’m in no way shape or form the type of grumpy I used to be (which is a huge pro).  OOPS! I forgot to mention I have a bit of a foggy head by the end of the day, that happened to me yesterday too.  And I’m dealing with some body acne, again I’m sure this is detox, this stuff has to get out of my body some way.  I guess my skin is taking the brunt of it for now.

I think that getting the right nutrition packed into juice, my body is finally on a path of healing.  God‘s way of healing, not some voodoo or some pill.  God’s creation is allowing me to become healthy again and I am forever grateful for that.  Over all I feel absolutely amazing!  I’ve been telling my coworkers all about it, I want everyone to hear about this.  I feel renewed, I feel healthy and oddly enough I keep thinking the weight has already dropped off because I just feel lighter.  Can’t be a bad thing!

MSG: A Very Tasty Poison.

 

The dangers of MSG posted by one of my favorite health bloggers.  She and I seem to be on the same health adventure, in fact sometimes I think we might be sisters, LOL.

Hungry for Change talks about MSG, it is really scarily hid in our food, so be careful when picking food.  If you google MSG fat mice/rats you can see photos of fat rats and mice.  They actually feed rats and mice MSG to fatten them up for studies.  Rats and mice are not naturally fat so in order to do so, they feed them MSG to make them that way.  What do you think it does to YOU when you eat it?  What do you think it does your your kids when they eat it?

I really feel like I am on God’s path for me.  After watching Hungry for Change I noticed some of the speakers themselves had “starred” in movies, basically they had some kind of health issue and they documented their journey to health.  One guy, Joe, he did a movie called Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.  I happened to find that movie is offered free (again LOVE free!) on hulu.com!  So this weekend Hubby and I sat down to take a peek.  Let me just say that I am overjoyed that Hubby is on board with all these things I bring up. I am truly blessed to have such a supportive spouse.

The movie starts with Joe, an Australian who is over weight and has an auto immune disorder.  He decides to go on a 30 day juice fast and travels to the USA to do so.  On his journey he meets a truck driver named Phil, who also has the same auto immune disorder that Joe has.  Joe tells Phil that if he ever wants to turn his life around, Phil was morbidly obese (many truck drivers seem to be) and very sick, to call him.  After Joe completes his journey, Phil calls him.  The last half of the movie is about Phil’s journey.  I couldn’t stop watching!  I had to see what was going to happen to these two.

Well Joe lost a ton of weight, his big gut was gone.  Phil eventually got off ALL medications and lost, I believe it was half of his weight.  All they “ate” was juice and water.  It was really life changing stuff.

I was ready to join the juicing “revolution” when Sunday morning I woke up to Hubby making up some Chorizo.   After reading that it contained “spices” which can be a way to hide chemicals like MSG, I decided to opt out of that breakfast option.  Hubby would later wish he chose that as well, but live and learn sometimes I guess.  I had a green smoothie with no milk but water instead, I added my normal spirulina, kelp, dulce, carob and wheat grass powders and it was satisfying and energizing.  We did eat food yesterday, and actually there is a youtube video where Joe says that you get a bit constipated after the third or fourth day of only juicing so he recommends eating actually fruit and veggies as well.  But I think we’re on to something here.  Yesterday we ran down to the grocery store and picked up $60 worth of fruits and mainly green veggies to juice.  The lady at the cash register actually said “we don’t much of this come through,” as she was trying to identify chard and kale, how sad is that!?!  We had juice for dinner and woke up and juiced.  To be honest with you, my energy level is much higher than it was when I drank coffee (which I’m only about two weeks without it).  I can actually FEEL my body craving the juice.  When we make it I get all giddy and excited, it’s almost like my body knows what is about to come.

I don’t think we will be 100% on the whole juicing thing.  I mean, we eat food too, but juicing will be a main part of our diet.  I can just tell a difference already in how I feel.  I wish I could tell everyone who was over weight about it, but just like in the movie, many people are just happy to be where they are.  There were a ton of people who said “Oh I could NEVER do that.”  Which I don’t get, why won’t we do things for ourselves that we would do for others?  Why would we allow ourselves to slowly die rather than get healthy and live life happy? And can’t anyone do anything for 10 days??  I guess it’s too easy to stay in a complacent place…

Start out slowly, add FRESH juice to your diet every day.  Pull our your juicer, or go buy one off craigslist (you can get a cheap one, well…cheap!).  We don’t have anything fancy (Juiceman II that we got at a garage sale), in fact we re-juice our pulp because it doesn’t get super dry the first pull.  Get tons of leafy green veggies, apples, carrots, celery, cucumber… with the sweet items (like carrots and apples) the juice is surprisingly sweet, even though it’s very green.  There is no way to be able to eat that much produce in a day, so get the nutrients into your body by drinking them.  Just start there, at least juice one time a day, if not make enough for your entire day.  I’m not saying you can’t eat food, just try doing one thing for your health.  It will be a chain reaction and sooner than you think you’ll be on your way to a different healthy life.  Want to join me?
